Continued suspension of Kasenseli gold mine puts central bank’s gold reserve build-up in jeopardy

The new Mines Minister Paul Kabuswe’s continued suspension of the Kasenseli gold mine operating license, and thus mining activities, from late October 2021 put the central bank’s gold reserve build-up target for 2021 in jeopardy. Since the gold-buying program began in January this year, the Bank of Zambia (BoZ) has spent approximately US$37 million on refined gold from First Quantum’s Kansanshi mine. Kasenseli Gold Mine’s operations in Mwinilunga, North-Western Province, were halted after a Ministerial directive from the Minister of Mines and Minerals Development to do so to address concerns… Read More Here

Galileo signs option agreement to earn 51% interest in Zambia copper/gold project

Aim-listed Galileo Resources has entered into an option and joint venture (JV) agreement with Garbo Resource Solutions to earn an initial 50% interest in the Shinganda copper/gold project, in Zambia. Galileo has committed to spending $500 000 on exploration and evaluation at Shinganda over a two-year period. “This project fits the Galileo model in that the licence areas have good copper and gold intersections from previous campaigns. The agreement gives us the opportunity for new deposit discovery and/or small mine production potential. “We look forward to working on this project commencing early in the New Year,” Galileo CEO Colin Bird says. Galileo plans to review past exploration data and undertake… Read More Here

Vedanta to support Zambia on green energy transition goals

Natural resources company Vedanta intends to support the Zambian government in its green energy transition goals, it confirmed on December 7. Jubilee upbeat about outlook for copper, PGM markets

Metals processor Jubilee Metals Group sees a rosy outlook for the copper and platinum group metal (PGM) markets in the years ahead. “The outlook for copper, in particular, remains buoyant, with many predictions that 2030 will see a doubling in demand for copper. I for one, see the supply side being severely challenged, with Chile as a major contributor to the copper supply, being challenged technically and socially. “The large copper systems that are now in favour are few and far between and have a gestation period of some 12 years. The lack of big projects being developed will, to me, facilitate smaller copper production from both surface and underground mines,”… Read More Here

What do next year’s changes to the mining tax regime actually mean for Zambians?

Making Zambia a more attractive destination for investment is the number one shared priority of Zambia’s brightest financial brains. Investment in the country’s mining sector, in particular, has the enormous potential of putting Zambia back on a growth trajectory, with the direct economic benefits from new and expanded mining operations second only to the economic multiplier effects that can support and sustain generations of upwardly mobile Zambians, when the environment is right. Experts agree: Harnessing the potential of this critical sector requires that Zambia urgently implement global best practices, without… Read More Here

HH, Tshisekedi hold talks in Kinshasa, agree to resolve trade barriers

Zambian President His Excellency Hakainde Hichilema held very fruitful bilateral talks with His Excellency Félix Antoine Tshisekedi Tshilombo in Kinshasa yesterday. Their talks centred around trade and investment and long-standing border issues between our two countries, which they agreed should be resolved harmoniously. They also agreed that trade and investment can be enhanced if they normalise border challenges. This would not only allow both countries to focus on the creation of business opportunities, but that such efforts would in turn improve livelihoods, health and education for the people of DRC… Read More Here
