Zambia power deficit not affecting mining

Zambia’s power supply deficit has grown by nearly 20% since September, state power utility Zesco said on Friday, despite massive price hikes and government fastracking support for green energy projects to fight drought-induced electricity shortages. Zesco’s Director of Corporate Services Patrick Mwila told a media briefing the electricity deficit had grown to 810 megawatts (MW) from a 690 MW gap in September. The senior executive said a deal to import 300 MW from South Africa’s struggling power utility Eskom had expired and would not be renewed. MINING COMPANIES INCLUDING FIRST… Read More Here

Enterprise FQM Development Nickel Project The Enterprise nickel project is located 12km away from our Sentinel copper mine in the North Western Province of Zambia. Overview Enterprise is a stand-alone nickel orebody in the north-west of the Trident license area. Given the operational and infrastructure synergies with the Sentinel copper mine, just 12km away, Enterprise is expected to be a low-cost nickel mine. Environmental approval has been granted, and preparatory works undertaken, so that pre-stripping can commence as market conditions become favourable. The nickel process plant was completed in 2016,… Read More Here

Zambia buys artisanal gold to formalise unregulated mining

Zambia’s mining  investment arm ZCCM-IH has started buying gold from artisanal and small-scale miners in a bid to formalise the unregulated sector whose ranks have swelled worldwide as gold prices soar. Governments across Africa are scrambling to tackle informal mining  of gold, which has significant health and environmental risks and contributes to illicit flows of money, depriving states of revenue when the metal is smuggled across boarders. Ethiopia, for example, runs artisanal gold buying centres which offer a higher price than the going market rate to attract miners away from… Read More Here

Multotec hydrocyclone solution for TSF in Zambia

A custom hydrocyclone solution from Multotec is allowing a large copper mine in Zambia to develop a safe and cost-effective tailings storage facility (TSF) The TSF faced a number of specific challenges, according to Frikkie Enslin, senior applications engineer responsible for cyclones at Multotec. These challenges include its extensive planned capacity and the area’s flat topography. The mine’s process plant pumps some 10,000m3 per hour of tailings to the TSF, requiring its final circumference to reach about 19km. “The flat area around the mine meant there was no suitable topography to… Read More Here

Maamba mitigates power risk at Lake Kariba

Falling water levels in Kariba have necessitated Maamba Collieries (MCL) to relocate its pumps to a new location in the Kariba Lake to provide water essential for the boilers of its 300-Megawatt power plant. MCL runs two power generating units, with a capacity of 150 MW, each of which consumes about 9,000 m3 of water a day when running at full capacity. Low rainfall during the last wet season caused water levels at the primary location of the pump station in Lake Kariba to drop dramatically from the usual 9-m depths… Read More Here
