Finland launches new battery metal traceability project amid Covid-19

VTT Technical Research Centre of Finland and the Geological Survey of Finland GTK have launched a new battery materials tracing platform, the Battrace project, aimed at enhancing sustainability in the mining industry. The Battrace project also focuses on the processes which metals undergo after being extracted from ore and refined into high-quality raw materials for battery material manufacturers.  The total project’s budget is about €5.8m, €2.7m of which is allocated for research.   Satellite communications services multinational Inmarsat’s research shows that 65% of mining organisations have fully deployed at least one Internet of Things- (IoT-) enabled project across their mine sites. It adds that the mining sector is in the midst of an IoT revolution. “The global mining sector is undergoing an IoT revolution, with respondents reporting significant increases in the adoption of connected technologies. Production of so-called battery metals, such as graphite, lithium and cobalt, will have to increase by nearly 500% by 2050 to meet the growing demand for clean energy technologies, the World Bank said on Monday. Cummins Zambia has completed a coolant plant project in Kitwe on the Copperbelt that received approval from the Zambia Environmental Management Agency (ZEMA) in 2019.  The ‘plug-and-play’ plant will produce two types of coolant, namely ES compleat Hybrid (Blue) and ES compleat OAT (Red).
