DRC Mines Minister Louis Watum Named Among MIPAD’s 2026 Global Top 50 in Solid Minerals

Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) Minister of Mines Louis Watum Kabamba has been recognised among the 2026 Global Top 50 Most Influential People in Solid Minerals by MIPAD (Most Influential People of African Descent).

Watum was recognised alongside figures from the mining, industrial, financial and public-policy sectors, including Aliko Dangote, Patrice Motsepe, Abdul Samad Rabiu, Larry Fink, Mike Henry and Makhtar Diop.

The recognition highlighted Watum’s more than three decades of experience in mining and African industrial development, spanning roles as an engineer and mining executive before his appointment as DRC Minister of Mines.

MIPAD is an international initiative that recognises influential people of African descent and members of the African diaspora across various sectors.

Watum said the recognition carried a responsibility to turn influence into practical results for the mining sector.

He highlighted the need to create more jobs and skills, strengthen local businesses, expand mineral processing within the DRC, develop infrastructure and increase benefits for mining communities.

The recognition comes as the DRC seeks to move beyond exporting raw minerals by expanding local processing, industrial capacity and value creation from its mineral resources.

The initiative also aligns with the government’s broader industrial development agenda under President Félix Tshisekedi and Prime Minister Judith Suminwa.
