EITI International Team Visits Kansanshi Mine as Part of Zambia’s Transparency Validation
Zambia’s Kansanshi Mining Hosts EITI Delegation in Ongoing Transparency and Governance Review
A delegation from the Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative (EITI) International Secretariat visited Kansanshi Mining PLC in Solwezi as part of Zambia’s ongoing EITI Validation process.
The exercise evaluates how effectively Zambian mining companies and government institutions adhere to global standards of transparency and governance in the extractive sector.
The visiting team included Ahmed Zouari, Validation Lead; Edwin Wuadom Warden, EITI Country Manager; Sebastian Sahla, EITI Policy Manager; and Nyasha Vera, EITI Communications Officer. They were joined by Zambia EITI National Coordinator Ian Mwiinga, who noted that Zambia’s last validation took place in 2021.
The current validation is based on the expanded EITI Standard, which now includes requirements for emissions reporting, cost transparency, and enhanced disclosure of revenues, licensing, and environmental management.
“This process helps assess Zambia’s implementation of EITI principles while building investor confidence and ensuring responsible resource management,” said Mr. Mwiinga.
The delegation was hosted by Corporate Affairs Superintendent Ryan Ellis and Assistant General Manager Axel Kottgen, who provided a comprehensive tour of the mine.
The team learned about Kansanshi’s operations, the S3 expansion project, safety systems, and community investment programs in education, health, agriculture, and development.
The visit also included discussions on public and statutory reporting mechanisms. Since its inception, EITI has played a key role in strengthening natural resource governance, fostering trust between governments, companies, and citizens, and ensuring that resource wealth contributes to sustainable development.
