Zambia Plans TAZARA Railway Modernisation to Strengthen Trade and Logistics Network
Zambia Targets TAZARA Railway Upgrade with $1.6 Billion Rehabilitation Plan to Boost Trade and Economic Growth
Zambia is advancing plans to modernise the TAZARA railway corridor, with President Hakainde Hichilema highlighting the importance of upgrading the route to support trade, transport efficiency and economic growth.
Speaking at the TAZARA train station in Kapiri Mposhi, President Hichilema said the government is committed to improving the railway, which provides a strategic link between Zambia and the port of Dar es Salaam in Tanzania.
The planned rehabilitation of the railway line, estimated at $1.6 billion, is expected to improve freight movement, strengthen regional connectivity and enhance Zambia’s role as a logistics hub.
Kapiri Mposhi, a key railway junction, is expected to benefit from increased economic activity linked to transport and infrastructure development.
The project includes the development of a dry port and railway workshops in Kapiri Mposhi.
The proposed dry port is expected to attract additional investment and support more efficient movement of goods between Zambia and international markets.
President Hichilema said the rehabilitation programme would support existing TAZARA employees while improving the railway’s operational capacity.
He also announced plans to address local infrastructure needs, including water supply improvements and road upgrades in Kapiri Mposhi.
The TAZARA upgrade forms part of Zambia’s broader efforts to expand infrastructure, improve regional trade links and attract private-sector investment through stronger transport networks.
