At phase 4 (by 2028), Kamoa-Kakula project should produce 1 million tonnes of copper – DRC
Production of more than one million tonnes of copper is expected at the end of the fourth production phase set for 2028 for the Kamoa-Kakula project of the mining company Kamoa Cooper.
It was the Minister of State, Minister of the Portfolio who communicated these data to the members of the Government during the forty-second meeting of the Council of Ministers held on Friday February 25, 2022.
Following her mission to the province of Lualaba from August 12 to 15, 2021, the Minister of the Portfolio, Adèle Kayinda, realized the good progress of the Kamoa-Kakula project.
Thanks to this performance of its production, the mining company Kamoa Cooper would rank second in the world, said the Minister of Mines.
The ores mined at Kamoa-Kakula have a copper content that fluctuates between 5% and 6.8%, far better than those extracted from the world’s largest Escondida mine in Chile, whose content is less than 1%.
This project, which started in 2008, should cost four (4) billion US dollars.
For the moment, the project is in its second phase and the investments made at this stage are two (2) billion dollars which notably include the constructions carried out on the site.
The Congolese Minister of Mines, Adèle Kayinda, pointed out that Kamoa Cooper carries out major
societal projects to improve the living conditions of the populations impacted by the company’s activity.
She shared, at the same time, the concerns raised by the mining operators before proposing to the Government a series of urgent measures to be implemented.
Among its proposals, the promotion of subcontracting in State portfolio companies transformed into commercial companies figures prominently in order to protect the national workforce and thus contribute to the emergence of a middle class Congolese.
