Zambia’s Energy Minister Addresses Power Deficit and Solutions
Hon. Makoso Chikote, Zambia’s Minister of Energy, addressed the nation on the ongoing power deficit, expressing gratitude for citizens’ resilience during this challenging period.
He acknowledged that September was particularly difficult, with prolonged power rationing affecting numerous households and businesses.
The power shortage is primarily due to three factors: reduced power generation at the Kariba North Bank Power Station, caused by water allocation challenges from the Zambezi River Authority; maintenance work at the 300MW Maamba Energy Power Plant; and technical issues with the power interconnector to Namibia.
Minister Chikote announced that the Maamba Energy Power Plant has successfully completed maintenance and resumed full operations as of October 1, 2024.
He also confirmed that the technical faults affecting power imports from Namibia have been resolved, enabling a more stable power supply.
With these improvements, he projected that Zambians would receive at least three hours of stable power supply daily for retail customers, with further enhancements expected in the coming months.
However, he emphasized that the government remains committed to addressing the root causes of the power crisis and minimizing its economic impact.
The Minister also highlighted President Hakainde Hichilema’s call for private power traders to step in and assist in alleviating the crisis.
He expressed appreciation for the swift response from private sector partners, underscoring the importance of collaboration in overcoming current energy challenges and securing a sustainable energy future.
In closing, Minister Chikote encouraged citizens and businesses to explore alternative energy solutions as Zambia works towards improving its energy security.
