EU Reaffirms Support for Peace and Humanitarian Efforts in the DRC
On Wednesday, April 30, 2025, Prime Minister Judith Suminwa Tuluka met with Mr. Johan Borgstam, the European Union’s Special Representative for the Great Lakes Region, at her office in Kinshasa.
Their discussion focused on the EU’s continued support for humanitarian efforts and the peace processes currently underway in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).
“It was a very warm exchange,” said Mr. Borgstam. “We discussed the European Union’s support for humanitarian operations in eastern DRC, ongoing peace initiatives, and development cooperation projects.
The EU has already delivered more than 100 tons of humanitarian aid, which has now arrived in Goma.”
Mr. Borgstam also welcomed the recent signing of a Declaration of Principles between the DRC and Rwanda, facilitated by the United States and held in Washington on April 25, 2025.
“I took the opportunity to commend the DRC government for its commitment, particularly through the signing of this important declaration.
We also underscore the need to safeguard the progress made in regional peace efforts, especially those initiated in Luanda.
This marks a significant step forward. I congratulate the Congolese government and all other parties involved,” he added.
The Declaration of Principles represents a commitment by both countries to respect each other’s sovereignty, end support for armed groups, and collaborate on regional security.
It also outlines the development of a comprehensive peace agreement, scheduled for completion by May 2, 2025.
