DRC Pushes for Responsible Mining to Transform Great Lakes Region
DRC Minister of Mines Advocates Transparency and Cooperation to Turn Minerals into Peace and Prosperity in the Great Lakes Region
The Congolese Minister of Mines, Louis Watum Kabamba, has called for a decisive shift in the management of natural resources in the Great Lakes region. Speaking at the 9th Meeting of Ministers in Charge of Mines of the ICGLR, held in Kinshasa, he emphasized that “the region’s mineral wealth should no longer be a source of conflict, but a lever for peace and shared prosperity.”
Minister Watum highlighted that the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) aims to reposition itself as a leader in a responsible and integrated mining economy. By promoting transparency, traceability, and interstate cooperation, the DRC seeks to create a governance model where minerals unite rather than divide nations.
This strategy aligns with the Congolese government’s broader macroeconomic reforms, which prioritize diversification, accountability, and sustainability. It also addresses the expectations of international investors seeking stability and predictability in the region’s mining sector.
Economic and geostrategic analyses suggest that such an approach could transform the DRC from a battleground for resource disputes into a regional hub for sustainable investment, generating tangible peace and economic benefits.
Experts note, however, that achieving this vision will require strong political will and the implementation of clear, measurable mechanisms shared by all stakeholders.
The DRC’s commitment signals a new era for the Great Lakes region, where responsible mining practices can foster economic growth, regional integration, and long-term stability.
