Zambia’s K360 Million Chikankata Road Upgrade Advances as Construction Reaches 35% Completion

Chikankata Road Upgrade Reaches 35% Completion as Zambia Expands Southern Province Infrastructure

Construction works to upgrade the Chikankata Road in Southern Province to bituminous standard have reached 35% completion, according to the Road Development Agency (RDA).

The K360 million project, which commenced in September 2025, is expected to be completed by February 2027.

RDA Southern Province Roads Engineer Namalala Chilala said the project is progressing steadily despite facing some implementation challenges.

Engineer Chilala said earthworks have been completed on approximately 20 kilometres of the 35-kilometre road, representing significant progress toward improving transport connectivity in the area.

He assured the public that all construction materials being used meet required quality standards, adding that the upgraded road is designed to provide a durable and reliable transport link while delivering long-term value for public investment.

RDA Chief Communications and Corporate Affairs Manager Anthony Mulowa described the Chikankata Road upgrade as a strategic infrastructure project that will support economic growth in Southern Province by improving mobility, trade, and access to key services.

The project is also contributing to local employment, with Site Manager Wu Ziyi revealing that about 120 residents from surrounding communities have so far been employed during the construction phase.

Once completed, the upgraded road is expected to enhance connectivity, support commercial activities, and improve the movement of goods and people within Chikankata and neighbouring areas.
