Zambia’s Copper Export Earnings Surge as Refined Copper Shipments Rise

Zambia’s refined copper exports recorded a strong increase in the first seven months of 2026, reflecting continued momentum in the country’s copper sector and growing export activity.

Refined copper export earnings increased by 88% during the January-to-July period, highlighting the metal’s continued importance to Zambia’s export performance and foreign-exchange earnings.

The increase comes as Zambia works to raise copper production and attract investment across the mining sector.

Higher production from existing operations, alongside the expansion of major mines and the development of new projects, is expected to support further growth in copper exports.

The strong export performance also comes amid favourable conditions in the international copper market, where demand continues to be supported by electrification, renewable energy, power-grid expansion and other energy-transition technologies.

Copper remains Zambia’s dominant export commodity, making developments in refined copper exports particularly significant for the broader economy.

Sustained growth in export volumes and earnings will be critical as the country seeks to expand production towards its 3-million-tonne annual copper target by 2031.

The latest figures therefore point to strengthening momentum in Zambia’s copper industry, although maintaining this growth will depend on continued investment, reliable power supply, mine expansion and the successful development of new copper resources.
