Kagem Resumes Targeted Mining to Boost Premium Emerald Recovery
Kagem Mining Limited, Zambia’s leading emerald producer, is set to resume focused open-pit mining operations to boost the recovery of premium-quality emeralds, Gemfields Group Limited announced yesterday.
Located in Lufwanyama District, the Kagem mine is 75% owned by UK-based Gemfields and 25% by the Zambian government through the Industrial Development Corporation (IDC).
Mining activities had been suspended since January 1, 2025, as part of a strategic cost-saving initiative. During the pause, operations shifted to processing existing ore stockpiles using an upgraded plant.
Although emerald production continued steadily in terms of carat output, the recovery of higher-grade stones fell short of expectations.
“The decision to restart mining at two strategic areas in the Chama pit follows encouraging auction results and improving market confidence,” Gemfields stated from its London office.
This targeted approach is aimed at minimizing waste and maximizing the recovery of premium-grade emeralds for upcoming high-value auctions.
The latest auction, held on April 30, 2025, showed robust demand in the commercial-quality segment, reinforcing confidence in market stability.
Gemfields CEO Sean Gilbertson noted that while full-scale mining will remain dependent on market conditions, the renewed extraction efforts represent a positive step toward ensuring a steady supply of top-tier Zambian emeralds.
Renowned globally for producing some of the finest emeralds, Kagem is a cornerstone of Zambia’s gemstone industry and a vital contributor to national revenue.
