Workers at Mutanda Mining Stage Strike for Improved Social Conditions

Employees of Mutanda Mining (MUMI), a subsidiary of the Glencore group located in the Lualaba province, have taken a stand by initiating a strike on Tuesday, April 23, 2024. Their primary demand from the employer is for enhanced social benefits.

The striking workers are calling for a substantial increase in the employer’s contribution towards their children’s school fees. Currently, they receive a mere $300 per year, a sum deemed woefully inadequate by the strikers. They are now advocating for an annual contribution of $5,000 to ensure their children receive quality education.

In a display of frustration, MUMI workers set tires ablaze in front of the company’s premises. According to one striker, despite the mining industry’s profitability, workers and their families struggle to reap the economic rewards of this activity.

The workers have stipulated that the resumption of operations is contingent upon the acknowledgment of their rightful demands.

They remain resolute in their determination to assert their rights and secure improvements in their working conditions, particularly in terms of social benefits such as tuition fee coverage.
