Zambia Begins K3.2 Billion Rehabilitation of Livingstone-Sesheke Road to Boost Trade and Tourism Connectivity
Livingstone-Sesheke Road Upgrade Begins as Zambia Awards K3.2 Billion Highway Rehabilitation Contracts
The long-awaited rehabilitation of the Livingstone-Sesheke Road is set to commence after the Road Development Agency (RDA) awarded contracts worth more than K3.2 billion to upgrade the key transport corridor.
The 212-kilometre M10 highway rehabilitation project is expected to significantly improve connectivity between Zambia’s tourism centres, border areas and commercial hubs while strengthening road infrastructure in Livingstone, Sesheke, Kazungula and Mwandi districts.
The project has been awarded to Sino-Hydro Corporation Limited, in partnership with Nchifar Enterprises Limited, with the works divided into two sections to improve efficiency and speed up implementation.
The first contract, valued at approximately K1.54 billion, will cover the rehabilitation of sections of the road between Livingstone and the Kazungula Turn-off, as well as the stretch from the Simungoma Turn-off area to Sesheke Boma.
The project will also include upgrading 10 kilometres of township roads in Livingstone and five kilometres in Sesheke.
The second contract, worth about K1.74 billion, will focus on the remaining sections of the highway towards Sesheke.
It will also include upgrading five kilometres of township roads in both Kazungula and Mwandi districts to bituminous standard.
RDA Chief Communications and Corporate Affairs Manager Anthony Mulowa said the agency had already handed over the project sites and issued instructions for the contractor to begin works.
“The contractor has commenced the design phase and is currently mobilising equipment to the site in preparation for full-scale construction activities,” Mr Mulowa said.
While preparations for the main rehabilitation works continue, the RDA has deployed equipment through Mwandi Town Council to repair severely damaged sections of the road.
The temporary works are aimed at improving road conditions in areas affected by heavy truck traffic, where vehicles have frequently experienced difficulties.
The Livingstone-Sesheke Road is an important route for tourism, trade and regional transportation, linking southern Zambia with western parts of the country and supporting access to border trade routes.
Additional Road Investment in Eastern Zambia
Meanwhile, the RDA has awarded another major road rehabilitation contract worth K1.6 billion to China Geo Engineering Corporation for the upgrading of the Chipata-Lundazi Road.
The project will include rehabilitation works on the highway as well as the upgrading of five kilometres of urban roads each in Lumezi and Lundazi districts.
According to Mr Mulowa, the contractor has already moved to site and started preliminary activities.
Full construction is expected to begin after completion of detailed designs later this month.
The two projects form part of Zambia’s broader efforts to modernise transport infrastructure, improve regional connectivity and support economic growth through better road networks.
