Zambia Appoints New Minerals Regulation Commission Board to Strengthen Mining Oversight and Investor Confidence

Mines and Minerals Development Minister Paul Kabuswe has inaugurated nine board members of the Minerals Regulation Commission (MRC), charging them with strengthening oversight, promoting legal mining activities and enhancing accountability in the sector.

Speaking during the induction ceremony in Lusaka, Mr Kabuswe urged the newly appointed board to champion responsible mining practices, enforce compliance with mining laws and ensure the sector continues contributing to economic growth, job creation and foreign exchange earnings.

According to the Zambia News and Information Services (ZANIS), the minister described mining as the backbone of Zambia’s economy and said the board had been entrusted with safeguarding the country’s mineral resources for both current and future generations.

“The mining sector is rapidly evolving due to global market dynamics, technological advancements and increasing demands for transparency and good governance.

The Commission’s role in regulating mining activities is therefore strategic and critical to national development,” Mr Kabuswe said.

He reaffirmed the government’s commitment to maintaining a stable, predictable and investor-friendly policy environment aimed at positioning Zambia as a competitive global mining destination.

MRC Board Chairperson Matongo Matamwandi said the board would serve with integrity, diligence and accountability, focusing on strategic oversight and sound policy direction while upholding strong corporate governance and ethical standards.

Mr Matamwandi added that board members were committed to strengthening institutional systems, improving compliance and enhancing regulatory frameworks to boost investor confidence and sector stability.

Meanwhile, MRC Director General Tomliuson Hara emphasized the importance of collaboration between government, mining industry players and cooperating partners.

He noted that open dialogue and strategic partnerships were essential to fulfilling the Commission’s mandate effectively.

Mr Hara said the new board brings fresh perspectives, diverse expertise and strengthened oversight capabilities, which would play a key role in providing strategic leadership and ensuring accountability within the Commission.

He further reaffirmed management’s commitment to working closely with the board to strengthen regulatory systems, promote compliance and ensure Zambia derives maximum value from its mineral resources.
