Barrick Safely Evacuates Workers Stranded by Severe Storms in Chile
Barrick Mining Corp. has safely evacuated workers who were stranded at its Barriales camp in northern Chile after severe storms blocked road access and disrupted transport routes.
The company said all evacuated workers were in good health following rescue operations that began on Friday and resumed early Saturday after weather conditions improved enough to allow helicopter flights.
Chile’s Economy and Mining Minister Daniel Mas also confirmed the safe evacuation of the workers in a post on X.
Barrick said it has kept a helicopter available to support government authorities with rescue and logistics operations through July 29 as recovery efforts continue in areas affected by the severe weather.
However, three workers at the Potrerillos camp will remain at the site until road access is restored. Barrick said the workers are safe and in good health and have adequate supplies of electricity, water and food.
The company had previously reported that the high-altitude camps could not be reached because of deteriorating weather conditions and blocked roads.
The storms have caused widespread disruption across northern Chile, resulting in more than a dozen deaths and hundreds of millions of dollars in damage.
Barrick continues to coordinate with authorities as efforts focus on clearing roads and restoring access to affected mining areas.
