Vulcan Invests €140.6 Million to Electrify Mozambique’s Moatize Coal Mine

Mining operator Vulcan has invested approximately €140.6 million ($160 million) to electrify its Moatize coal mine in Mozambique’s Tete province, in a project the company describes as Africa’s first fully electric mine.

The investment will replace diesel-powered mining equipment with electric machinery, reducing the mine’s reliance on diesel while lowering operational emissions and improving energy efficiency.

A key component of the project is a power system capable of generating up to 300 MW, supplying electricity to mining and coal-processing operations. The system could also provide surplus power to Mozambique’s national grid.

The electrification programme represents a significant shift in the operation of the Moatize mine, one of Mozambique’s major coal-producing assets.

Rather than relying predominantly on diesel fuel for heavy equipment, the mine will increasingly use electricity to power its extraction and processing activities.

The move is expected to reduce exposure to diesel-price volatility and fuel-supply disruptions while supporting Vulcan’s efforts to improve the long-term efficiency of its operations.

The project also highlights the changing approach to mine decarbonisation. While Moatize produces coal, electrifying the mining operation can reduce emissions associated with extraction and processing without changing the emissions associated with the eventual use of the coal.

Vulcan’s investment comes as mining companies across Africa face growing pressure to reduce operational emissions, improve energy efficiency and adopt cleaner technologies.

The Moatize project could therefore serve as a significant example of how large-scale African mining operations can transition from diesel-powered equipment to electric systems while maintaining industrial productivity.

The initiative also has potential implications beyond the mine itself. By developing additional power-generation capacity and the ability to supply surplus electricity to the national grid, the project could contribute to Mozambique’s wider energy infrastructure.

Vulcan’s investment ultimately positions Moatize at the forefront of mining electrification in Africa, combining a major industrial operation with a substantial shift towards electric-powered production.
