KCM Breaks 10,000-Tonne Monthly Copper Production Milestone
KCM Hits 10,000 Tonnes of Monthly Copper Production as $662 Million Local Procurement Boosts Zambia’s Mining Sector
Konkola Copper Mines (KCM) has achieved a major production milestone, with monthly copper output reaching 10,000 tonnes as the Zambian mining company advances a wide-ranging transformation programme.
The milestone marks a significant improvement from KCM’s previous monthly production range of approximately 8,000 to 8,500 tonnes, highlighting the impact of investment in mine rehabilitation, infrastructure, technology and people.
KCM Chief Corporate Affairs Officer Dr John Kunda said the production gains form part of the company’s broader transformation programme, which is aimed at supporting Zambia’s copper production targets and contributing to economic diversification.
$662 Million in Local Contracts
KCM has also strengthened its contribution to Zambia’s local mining supply chain, awarding approximately ZMW12.2 billion ($662 million) in contracts to local enterprises.
The company has increased local procurement to 52%, up from 31% before the mine’s revival, while approximately 1,500 contracts and purchase orders have been awarded to Zambian contractors.
The increase in local sourcing is expected to create wider opportunities for Zambian businesses and strengthen the participation of local suppliers in the mining value chain.
Konkola Deep Mining Project
KCM’s production growth is being supported by significant investment in its operations, including the Konkola Deep Mining Project, which is focused on developing a modern and sustainable mining operation.
The project is expected to play an important role in strengthening Zambia’s copper production capacity while creating long-term opportunities for employees, businesses and surrounding communities.
KCM’s latest milestone comes as Zambia seeks to significantly increase copper production and position the sector as a stronger driver of economic growth.
The combination of higher production increased local procurement and investment in the Konkola Deep Mining Project underscores KCM’s growing role in Zambia’s ambition to expand copper output and capture greater economic value from its mineral resources.
