DRC Reports Over 1,000 kg of Germanium Hydroxide Output in 2025 Amid Highly Volatile Production
DRC germanium hydroxide production reaches 1,068 kg in 2025 with sharp volatility and export volumes
The Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) produced 1,068.07 kilograms of germanium hydroxide in 2025, according to data from the Technical Unit for Mining Coordination and Planning (CTCPM) under the Ministry of Mines.
During the same period, the country exported 1,079.87 kilograms of the material, indicating that nearly all recorded production was shipped abroad.
The CTCPM notes that germanium hydroxide production in 2025 was highly unstable, following a pronounced “sawtooth” pattern marked by sharp fluctuations.
The data shows intermittent peaks followed by immediate declines, with the highest monthly output reaching 294.23 kilograms.
Production then fell significantly after September, dropping to its lowest levels in November and December, when output reportedly reached zero.
Germanium hydroxide is a strategic material used in several high-technology applications.
It is employed in the production of optical glass and fibre optics, where it enhances refractive properties.
It is also used as a catalyst in the manufacture of polyethylene terephthalate (PET) resin and plays a role in semiconductor applications, including high-performance transistors and diodes.
