DRC’s Mines Minister Emphasizes Global Approach to Energy Security at Indaba 2023

The Congolese Minister of Mines, Antoinette N’Samba Kalambayi, called on the investment community in South Africa and around the world to grasp the issue of energy security in a globalizing dimension in relation to the triptych “Security-Stability- supply “.

It was during a business dinner organized on Wednesday, February 8, 2023, under the theme “the Congolese mineral industry at a time of security, energy and innovation challenges” during the Indaba Mining Forum 2023 in Cape Town in South Africa.

The Congolese Minister of Mines considers inhuman the extraction of minerals against a background of blood and the objectification of the human person.

According to her, security mechanisms must be ensured for the well-being of workers in the mining sector in accordance with the criteria for managing environmental, social and governance issues, which constitute a pillar of socially responsible investment.

“I call on us to grasp the issue of security in a globalizing approach and in its transversality, because I consider that the security of investments is the guarantee of their stability and that both promote a healthy and sustainable supply of minerals, particularly those of the energy transition, because the context obliges us to index them.

However, it should be noted that this safety imperative must also be shared by operators in the mining sector. It is not normal that in the middle of the 21st century, we continue to offer ourselves the minerals extracted against the background of the blood and the objectification of the human person.

The safety of the worker in the mining industry and his well-being must be considered as an important factor in the ESG criteria (the management of environmental, social and governance issues), which today form the basis of socially responsible investing. “, she said.

As a reminder, the 28th edition of the Indaba Mining Forum was held under the theme “Unleashing investment in the African mining sector: security, stability and supply”.

Apart from the President of the Republic, Félix Tshisekedi, and the Minister of Mines, several authorities and entrepreneurs of the country took part in this conference, namely the Governors of provinces including Jacques Kyabula Katwe from Haut-Katanga and Fifi Masuka from Lualaba.
