KCM’s US$5 Million Road Upgrade Project Nears Completion in Chililabombwe and Chingola

Konkola Copper Mines Nears Completion of US$5 Million Road Rehabilitation Project in Zambia’s Copperbelt

Konkola Copper Mines (KCM) has made significant progress on its US$5 million road rehabilitation programme in Chililabombwe and Chingola, with construction works in Chililabombwe approaching completion and road upgrades gathering pace in Chingola.

The infrastructure initiative involves the rehabilitation and construction of approximately eight kilometres of roads across the two Copperbelt towns, including 4.1 kilometres in Chililabombwe and 3.9 kilometres in Chingola.

The project forms part of KCM’s broader commitment to community development and infrastructure improvement through its social investment programmes.

In Chililabombwe, rehabilitation works on Kamenza Way and several key interconnecting roads linking the central business district to the mine township have reached approximately 80% completion.

The project also includes the upgrading of Konkola Road, a strategic route connecting the town to the international road network, as well as the installation of modern street lighting to improve road safety and enhance the urban environment.

KCM Corporate Social Responsibility Manager Brian Siatubi said the project has already had a positive impact on local communities by improving mobility and restoring confidence among residents and businesses.

“The road rehabilitation programme is one of the flagship projects being implemented under the KCM Trust Board’s social investment initiatives,” said Siatubi. “The upgraded road infrastructure will improve the movement of people, goods and services while supporting economic activity across the two towns.”

In Chingola, rehabilitation works are progressing on major township roads, including Fifth Street, Fourth Street and Third Street.

Once completed, the roads are expected to improve access to key public facilities such as Chingola Central Hospital, residential areas, recreation centres and the civic centre, while helping to ease congestion along major routes, including Kitwe Road.

Siatubi noted that the project is also delivering direct socio-economic benefits through local employment.

Implemented in partnership with contractor Hanhe Industries, the programme has created jobs for 50 young people from the surrounding communities, providing them with practical experience and skills in road construction and infrastructure development.

He expressed confidence that the works would be completed by the end of June, adding that the upgraded road network would contribute to improving the appearance and functionality of Chingola while supporting its reputation as one of Zambia’s most well-planned urban centres.

KCM reaffirmed its commitment to investing in sustainable community development projects, with infrastructure improvement remaining a key pillar of the company’s strategy to enhance the quality of life in the communities where it operates.
