DRC Considers Zambian Tailings Water Treatment Technology for Mining Sector
DRC Explores Zambian Mining Wastewater Technology to Improve Environmental Protection and Water Recycling
Minister of Mines Louis Watum Kabamba held talks on Tuesday, May 5, 2026, with a delegation from Zambian group SACOR to discuss the potential introduction of advanced wastewater treatment technology for the Democratic Republic of Congo’s mining sector.
The delegation, led by Solange Kappongo, presented an innovative solution designed to treat wastewater generated during the ore concentration process, commonly known as tailings management.
According to SACOR, the technology uses specialized equipment to separate solid mining residues from water, allowing for improved waste management, water recycling and safer mining operations.
Minister Kabamba welcomed the proposal, describing the technology as strategically important for the DRC’s mining industry and environmental protection efforts.
He noted that the system could help reduce pollution risks for communities located near mining and metallurgical facilities by enabling the reinjection of solid waste into mining sites while allowing treated water to be reused in industrial operations.
The Minister also expressed support for pilot testing before any large-scale deployment, saying the government wants to assess the effectiveness of the technology under local mining conditions.
In addition, Mr Kabamba pledged to facilitate engagement between SACOR and mining companies operating in the DRC to explore broader collaboration on environmentally sustainable mining practices.
The initiative comes as the DRC seeks to strengthen environmental standards in its rapidly expanding mining industry, particularly in copper and cobalt production regions where tailings management and industrial pollution remain key concerns.
